sharing a special bible: my 1980 NAB

And by NAB, I mean New American Bible, St. Joseph edition, from the Catholic Book Publishing Company of America, I think. I'm following the lead of the Internet Monk here. Sounded like an interesting blogercise.

My actual bible is to the left, such as it is now. It once looked like that cover shown on the right. It wasn't "genuine leather" or anything. I think it was either bonded leather or some kind of leatherette. It was given to me as a gift by someone who is special in my life as a Christian. Her name was Dr. Camilla Bauer. She was a radiologist in Harlan and a member of Holy Trinity church, where I came into Christ. Many of you know my story - I wasn't raised Catholic, so my parents are not Catholic. I came into the Life of Christ through the Catholic Church "on my own" as a 12/13 year-old, being baptized in 1980. Dr. Bauer gave me this bible after I was baptized and confirmed. She sort of took me under her wing, as it were. She was a wise, grandmotherly figure to me. She is now in the grandstands above, hopefully praying for me.

It has been the bible I've used for many years - through high school and college and after. I've gotten other ones - a smaller one once, a fancier one another time, I even lost this one in boxes for a little while. I have found it thought and it still remains the one I prefer to use. It's the earlier version of the NAB, which I prefer to the new one. This is the bible I know. I can find passages by where they are on the page, you know how that works.

These days there are quite a few pretty good translations out there, I have no doubt. As long as one is fairly accurate, I'm sure it's fine. I've always liked this one. I've had many experiences where you're listening to one of these teachers who likes to get into the Greek say something like "now what this word actually means is..." - and I look down and it's already there. That'll work I reckon. I suppose that's it for my old bible. I'll keep it as long as it stays together I guess.

"Then, if we cannot as yet think alike in all things, at least we may love alike. Herein we cannot possibly do amiss."

"Keep your eyes on the crucifix, for Jesus without the cross is a man without a mission, and the cross without Jesus is a burden without a reliever."
Fulton J. Sheen

"...I am deeply convinced that the Christian leader of the future is called to be completely irrelevant and to stand in this world with nothing to offer but his or her own vulnerable self."
Henri Nouwen
