most sacred heart

Thus says the Lord GOD:
I myself will look after and tend my sheep.

As a shepherd tends his flock

when he finds himself among his scattered sheep,

so will I tend my sheep.

Ezekiel 34

The love of God has been poured out into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

For Christ, while we were still helpless,

died at the appointed time for the ungodly.

Romans 5

Today is the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. I've talked about this before - the fact that I've always been drawn to the image of the Sacred Heart. I wish I had my Ratzinger book, Behold The Pierced One, with me so I could grab a quote from where he gets into this concept. Maybe I'll put one up later - very good stuff.

Here's something I thought though: now, is Jesus really sitting up in heaven with his hand pointing toward his heart with little nails and a crown of thorns in it? Seriously people. Of course He isn't. Protestant-leaning Christians tend to get all bent out of shape about things like this. They've been trained to think that things like icons or devotions that point to an aspect of the Life and Nature of Christ as being something like idolatry or that they muddy the waters of who Jesus Is. Odd.

Charistmatic folk will understand this - it's like when God gives you a picture of something in prayer. He shows you something to help you "get it" in a deeper way, to connect with a deeper reality. That's what the Sacred Heart is. It was actually something shown to a Christian in a vision in prayer, to help her and other Christians see and meditate on the deep, fathomless Love of God, of Jesus in His sacrifice for us. Some of those pictures are not just for our own private devotion. They are given to help us all be drawn into a deeper union with the Savior. It is, in effect, prophecy given for the edification of all those who will hear it. In this case, it's see it, but it's the same.

So, a devotion like this - a meditation like this - on a picture, an image like this - is about Jesus. It's about the core of His Love for us. It's about His great and eternal desire to draw us into the very Heart of His Being and transform us completely. Sacred Heart of Jesus! Draw us in. Transform us. Make us new.
