merton, morgan, and snow

Last night I had a treat. Here in Lexington, filmmaker Morgan Atkinson (from Louisville) hosted a showing of his new documentary film about Thomas Merton - Soul Searching: The Journey of Thomas Merton. The Lexington premiere was held at the Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King. He made another documentary a couple of years ago about the monastery in which Merton lived for 27 years, called Gethsemani - great look into life behind the walls. His new work is also a good one. You can buy them both from Morgan there on his site.

It included many readings from Merton's journals and touched on subjects such as his desire to start a new monastery, to have more solitude (scouting out places on his way to Asia in '68); his work with the Peace movement in the 60's (talking much about how Christians should be looking at and thinking about things like nuclear war or war at all as well as race issues which were so prevalent at the time); his dealings with superiors; falling in love with a woman while a hermit and the crisis involved in that situation; his study of Asian religions and philosophy; as well as his life in the monastery as monk, student, priest, teacher, and spiritual master. All over a backdrop of great Jazz music, which he loved. Nice touch.

It was a good night with friends and fellow bloggers Bryan Sherwood and Kyle Potter (who has apparently, finally, "gotten" enough to want to read the old boy). I am pleased. We sighted Michael Spencer's son Clay, a couple of rogue Asbury Seminary professors, and I said hi to my old college Newman Center Priest (a slightly awkward "I'm not Roman Catholic any more" moment - still feeling weird about that). Oh, and just because that's the case doesn't mean I didn't stop in front of the perpetual Eucharistic adoration chapel for a second, bow, and cross myself.

Oh, and it snowed. I'll say it again, it snowed pretty good. I guess it's about 2-3 inches. I know, I know, you Canadians and Michiganers or even my Uncle in Denver can scoff, but we haven't had any appreciable snow around these parts for a loooong time. It's ridiculous. I was just happy. I'm still happy about it. It's a beautiful thing. There are a couple of shots from tonight at about 6pm. It had a great blue glow about that time. It's not going anywhere either. The cold air is coming in, so melting isn't going to be an issue.

"Then, if we cannot as yet think alike in all things, at least we may love alike. Herein we cannot possibly do amiss."
John Wesley

"Keep your eyes on the crucifix, for Jesus without the cross is a man without a mission, and the cross without Jesus is a burden without a reliever."
Fulton J. Sheen

"...I am deeply convinced that the Christian leader of the future is called to be completely irrelevant and to stand in this world with nothing to offer but his or her own vulnerable self."
Henri Nouwen
